This week Young Jeezy producer, Shawty Redd, nabbed a Grammy nomination for Snoop Dogg's "Sensual Seduction." SOHH caught up with the Atlanta-based beatmaker to talk about his recent nomination and his upcoming solo album.
Shawty Redd is best known for producing the much of Young Jeezy's platinum-selling debut, Let's Get It: Thug Motivation 101. But it was his work with West Coast legend Snoop Dogg that scored him his first Grammy nomination. The auto-tuned "Sensual Seduction" will be up for "Rap Song of the Year" at the Grammy Awards in February.
"It hasn't hit me yet," Shawty Redd confessed. "Right now, I'm real happy about it. I just hope I win."
Redd told SOHH that Snoop Dogg reached out him after hearing his song called, "Drifter" which was gaining popularity in the strip clubs.
"Snoop actually had a chance to hear it and he wanted to buy that record from me. At the time I had a deal on the table for that record so I told him I'd just make him one like it and I came up with 'Sensual Seduction.'"
Though he's produced for artists like Gucci Mane, 8Ball & MJG and Pastor Troy in the past, Redd knows that this Grammy nomination is a turning point in his career.
"I been doing this music thing for a long time and never been nominated for nothin' so it's real big for me," he said. "I feel like it's gonna open up some big doors for me."
Back in October of 2007 Sylvia Rhone signed Shawty Redd to an artist deal with Universal Motown and shortly thereafter he accepted an A&R position at the label. Now he's focused on preparing his debut album for release sometime in 2009.
"I'm tryna give everybody something," he said. "I'm trying to do music for everybody. It's like the Jekyll and Hyde project. I got some pop. I got some hard. I got some R&Bish."
Redd and the producers signed to his production company will be handling most of the production for the album but he has reached out to a few of his famous friends. DJ Toomp, Lil' Jon and Don Cannon have all provided beats and Redd also has some guest appearances in store.
"I got Snoop on a record with me," he revealed. "Right now I'm in the process of putting this record together with Jeezy and Fabolous. I'm trying to make my project as big as I've done records for everybody else."
