POMPANO BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) -- Police have arrested a suspected stalker accused of a rash of disturbing robberies, including a rape.
The Broward Sheriff's Office announced the arrest of 25-year-old Donovan Bryan late Monday afternoon.
Bryan has been implicated in at least four attacks along Briny Avenue in November. Investigators said he threatened his victims with a gun and wore a mask. He then robbed them of cash and took their personal property, like cell phones.
According to authorities, BSO undercover detectives observed the suspect acting suspicious near Briny Avenue early Sunday morning while conducting an extensive investigative and tactical operation. Once authorities made contact with the suspect, his car was searched. In the car, they discovered the gun and mask used in his attacks.
Police said, in every case he targeted couples walking together along the beach late at night. In one case, he raped one of the women. "He is a violent person, who was preying on couples. He is no longer out there. He has been taken into custody," said BSO spokesperson Veda Coleman-Wright.
Neighbors of the quiet beachside community said they feel safe once again.
Resident Robert Grilli said, "Frankly, I was surprised. This has not happened to my knowledge since I've been here for seven years.
"Getting more and more [criminals] off the streets, the better and better, so I'm very happy for it," Alicia Bondurant said.
Prior to Florida, Bryan resided in New Jersey, where he reportedly attended Rutgers University. Authorities said Bryan is a Jamaican national and was in the U.S. illegally.
Authorities said Bryan was initially charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. In addition to an immigration hold, Bryan is also being charged with armed sexual battery and attempted armed robbery stemming from the Nov. 15 rape.
