I often find it hilarious how “Hip-Hop heads” become so quick to throw certain artists into a box; only considering a select few with
distinct styles worthy of praise. They do it much in the same vein as
Rock & Roll enthusiasts who’d never give somebody such as Phoenix the amount of respect that they may well
deserve. It is my opinion that these kind of narrow-minded views are
what’s going to stall Hip-Hop’s growth much more than the next Gucci Mane 6 part mixtape series.
One of the artists that falls into this category is Gucci’s Atlanta, GA counterpart Young
Jeezy. Ever since his first album dropped, Mr. 17.5 has found his
name in the midst of countless, albeit pointless debates on “who killed
Hip-Hop.” He even went so far as to address the subject on his third
album in the form of “Word Play.” Thankfully, the tune of the song was
unapologetic and brash, like any artist should be when criticism is
thrown their way (about their music John Mayer, you douche.)
You see, the Snowman shouldn’t have felt any reason to combat the negativity; because soon, the new-age lyricists are going to emerge
citing the Trap-rap pioneer as a major influence. Because, while the
likes of Jay-Z, Rakim and Nas set the bar lyrically and stylistically,
it was Jeezy who gave my generation the motivational soundtrack we
needed to “Git Up, Git Out.” So as I sit and type this, 20 years deep
into this life I was blessed with, I realize that the Sky’s The Limit.*
And with the Lets Get It mentality that has been instilled in me, I
will not stop until I reach what I’m reaching for. Because while Jeezy’s
motivation was intended for the thugs, it ended up reaching a whole
nation in it’s peripheral.
