Jay-Z and Beyonce Attempt to Trademark Blue Ivy's Name

It looks like after Hov and Beyonce named their newborn baby Blue Ivy everyone is following suit. So many people to the point that the two attempted to trademark the name.

(Forbes) Only a little over a month old and already Blue Ivy Carter is taking the world by storm. The firstborn daughter for powerhouse hip-hop couple Beyonce and Jay-Z, Blue Ivy is a babe in designer clad arms. Some of her current assets include a 2,200-square-foot nursery, six nannies, celebrity friends of the family in Gwyneth Paltrow and Rihanna, a million-dollar Mercedes minivan, and her own song “Glory” sung by proud papa Jay-Z. Adding to that list is also her own trademark, one that both parents filed for at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on January 26th.

The move to trademark the name has less to do with paranoia and more with protection of a future brand at bay. Already two other people have attempted to submit applications on behalf of taking Blue Ivy for their own personal use. One was fashion designer Joseph Mbeh who submitted an application on Jan. 11th for “Blue Ivy Carter NYC” a proposed children’s clothing line he could create. His request was denied and Mbeh issued a statement apologizing and had hoped to “ultimately present the idea to The Carters in hopes that a business relationship could be formed to create Blue Ivy Carter NYC for them.”

The other unnamed applicant wanted to trademark “Blue Ivy Carter IV” for a fragrance line  and along with Mbeh, was shot down too by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office with the office citing that the name belonged to “a very famous infant.”

“In essence, it’s a trademark for a brand, and this brand is expected to be one hot commodity — just look at Blue Ivy’s parents,” says Vikki Ziegler, family law attorney and author, “Anyone else that tried to use the name after the trademark was approved could be sued and held liable for damages.”

While Bey and Jay await their pending application to go through (they shouldn’t have any problems with that), there are plenty of benefits to focus on that come with trademarking their baby name- and what it can mean for the future offspring of other power couples.
