Alton man killed, nephew shot in home attack

ALTON -- One man was killed and his nephew was wounded in an attack inside their home early today, police say.
Frank J. Smith, 54, was fatally shot and his nephew, Shannon D. Smith, 30, was injured in the double shooting about 3 a.m. today in the 900 block of Brown Street in Alton.


Police dispatchers said the suspect, whose face was concealed during the attack, fled in a gray Hummer.

At 6 a.m. today, Alton Police Officer Emily Hejna said no one was in custody and police weren't releasing any information about a suspect.

Hejna said Frank Smith and Shannon Smith shared the home on Brown Street. Police got a 911 call at 3:05 a.m. today, reporting the shooting.

Shannon Smith was taken by helicopter to Barnes-Jewish Hospital. He had been shot in the wrist, neck and chest. Hejna said Shannon Smith's injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Frank Smith was taken by ambulance to Alton Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
