Most hip hop blog readers are familiar with 50 Cent’s website ThisIs50.com. For those of you who aren’t familiar it can best be described as one part social network, one part 50 Cent nut riding festival. 50 Cent’s team has used the website to report on current hip hop news, to promote new projects from G-Unit artists and to take shots at all the artists 50 Cent doesn’t like. One of the biggest events for the website was the release of the free mixtape “Elephant In The Sand” which was a free mixtape by G-Unit artists which was made to poke fun at and to spoil the release of Fat Joe’s album Elephant In The Room album. And now 50’s at it again but this time it’s not funny or cute, it’s just plain old grimey.
Right now ThisIs50.com is promoting a new free mixtape. There aren’t any G-Unit artists on this one though. However a former G-Unit artist is on every track, The Game. That’s because the website’s newest free mixtape is actually Game’s whole album LAX. Front to back. In an effort to see that Game’s album is a failure 50 Cent is encouraging his readers to download it for free instead. How messed up is that?
I’m thinking this might be bit too much. I understand that the guys hate each other but is that really a can of worms that any artist wants to open? Artists are already making way less off of albums than they used to, so just imagine an industry where artists purposely and publicly leak each others albums and promote the free downloading. No one is gonna make any money off sales. Though he has many sources of income to supplement low sales, not even 50 wants that.
Now we provide music here on HN but I never encourage people to download it but 50 is strongly encouraging it. I know there are many 50 fans out there that think everything the guy does is “genius” or “the greatest marketing ever” but this is wack. The music industry has been dying for a while but I think 50 just killed it. Pandora’s box is now open. Welcome to the free for all.
