The shooting and beating on a man early Saturday morning in Portsmouth appears to be a random robbery, police said Tuesday.
Investigators expect to bring more charges against the four people who were arrested, said Detective Jan Westerbeck of Portsmouth police.
The 19-year-old man who was shot remained in stable condition Tuesday at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, police said. His name has not been released.
Officers were called to the 1800 block of London Boulevard, where they found the man unconscious on a curb.
Three attackers approached the man on London Boulevard while a fourth remained in an SUV, a police statement said. The man ran and was shot numerous times, police said.
“After shooting the victim, the three suspects got back into the vehicle with suspect four. Suspect four ran over the victim and drug him several feet with the vehicle,” the statement said. “While the victim laid on the ground, all four suspects got out of the vehicle and began hitting the victim with tire irons and guns.”
Police arrested two men and two juveniles Saturday. The adults charged were Marcus Lamontra Winegan, 18, of the 3300 block of Wisteria Court in Chesapeake and Bennie Maurice Walker Jr., 18, of the 5700 block of Gibson Street in Portsmouth.
All four were charged with attempted robbery, aggravated malicious wounding, felony hit and run and two counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony.
Winegan and Walker were being held in the Portsmouth jail. The juveniles, ages 15 and 17, were being held in the Tidewater Detention
