The sports world has been delt yet another astonishing blow. As the country prepared for its holy grail all events, the Superbowl details about the ilicit activities of greatest competitor in Olympic history were unfolding.
On November 6, just weeks after taking home eight gold medals 23-year-old Michael Phelps surprised students at the University Of South Carolina in Columbia by showing up unannounced at a house party. He allegedly visiting a secret flame named Jordan Matthews.
According to News of the World Source, “Michael came to visit Jordan but ended up just getting wasted every night.”
“He arrived with a group of girls hanging all over him. Jaws hit the floor when he walked in. You don’t get many celebrities in Columbia, so when Phelps comes to your party it’s a very big deal.
He didn’t know many people so you’d think he’d be a little shy. But he was loud, obnoxious and slamming beers from the get-go.
Every girl wanted a piece of him and every guy wanted to be his best buddy. He couldn’t get enough of all the attention…He was out of control from the moment he got there. If he continues to party like that I’d be amazed if he ever won any more medals again.”
The fact is he might not have a chance to. According to current regulations Phelps actions could land him a four year ban squashing his dream of adding to his overall 14 gold medal tally at the 2012 games in London.
When news of the photo and witness became known to Team Phelps his aides, as you might imagine offered everything short of a spot in heaven for the paper not to run the photos. With the mounting evidence and pressure the swimmer has decided admitted that the picture is authentic and has issued this statement.
“I engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgement,” Phelps said. I’m 23 years old and despite the successes I’ve had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner people have come to expect from me. For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public it will not happen again.”
The US Olympics Committee, USA Swimming and Phelps’ coach Bob Bowman and the World Anti-Doping Agency’s have all refused to comment.
Although Phelps has resumed his training there have been some concerns about his commitment when, weeks after the bong incident, he allegedly began dating a former stripper, Caroline Pal.
According to a Phelps Spokesman, Clifford Bloxham the swimmer had taken 1,500 drug tests and never failed one.
While Phelps has “apologized” his statement leaves the door open for interpretation as he hasn’t yet admitted to anything accept and error in judgment. Alcohol use isn’t a crime nor is it a violation of drug policy while not competing. I’m eager to see what our resident PR expert Zack has to say and how he anticipates Team Phelps will spin this. My guess is he’ll admit to being at the party but somehow explain the bong as a device for smoking tobacco, better yet cloves. He can say good bye to those endorsements though.
