Murder rate in Chicago up 18 percent over 7-month period of 2007

Sixty-two slayings in July, police source says Violent crime continued to rise in Chicago after a deadly July in which 62 people were killed, according to unofficial numbers provided by a police source.

For the first seven months of 2008, murders rose by 18 percent over the same period in 2007 and by 9 percent for the same period in 2006. According to internal police data, 291 people were killed from January through July, up from 246 in 2007 and 266 in 2006.

It's the law: No sagging pants in Chicago suburb

Be careful if you have saggy pants in the south Chicago suburb of Lynwood. Village leaders have passed an ordinance that would levy $25 fines against anyone showing three inches or more of their underwear in public.

8 year old girl killed in Chicago alley

A young girl was stabbed to death Monday in an alley outside her father's South Side home, according to authorities.

Mya Lyons was found near the 8400 block of South Gilbert Court in Auburn Gresham, authorities said. Although authorities say she was 8, her grandfather, Orlando Barnes, said she was 9.

Bangas kill teen in Chicago funeral procession

A 19-year-old man was fatally shot Monday afternoon during an apparent gang-related attack on a funeral procession on Chicago's Southwest Side, an incident that briefly led authorities to lock down the hospital where the victim was taken for fear of more gang violence.

The 26th Chicago Public Schools student killed

A 15-year-old boy was killed and a man critically wounded in a shooting Monday night on Chicago's Northwest Side, police said. The teen is the 26th Chicago Public Schools student killed since the beginning of last school year.
